On March 9, 1959, at the New York Toy Fair, Barbie made her debut. Ruth and Elliot Handler designed her after seeing their daughter Barbara playing with paper dolls. Ruth wanted to build a doll that would help children act out their adult or adolescent desires. Barbie’s mother, according to her, is herself. Many celebrities, including Emma Thompson, Marie Osmond, and Sarah Ferguson, were born in the same year as Barbie.
