For a nose piercing, the most common needle gauge is 18. Individuals who like smaller holes should choose 20 or 22 gauge. The most common gauge for nose piercings is 16, while jewellery for this size is uncommon.

Needle piercings usually yield better outcomes than those performed with piercing guns. Because the material used in nose rings is more likely to be hypoallergenic than studs, rings heal faster and prevent infection better. To allow tissues to heal, rings should be left in place for at least six weeks. The area must be kept clean and dry during this period.
