A high school basketball game consists of four 8-minute minutes, with a 10- to 15-minute halftime break and a 1-minute break between the first and second periods, as well as the third and fourth periods. However, depending on the amount of foul calls, timeouts, and overtime periods, the overall length of a basketball game fluctuates.
If the game is still tied after regulation, overtime begins with four 4-minute minutes and continues until the score is no longer tied at the end of each term. On February 29, 1964, Angier and Boone High Schools in North Carolina played 13 overtime sessions in the world’s longest boys basketball game. In 1969, East Ridge and Ooltewah High Schools in Tennessee played for 16 overtime periods in the world’s longest ladies basketball game. Regulation high school basketball is governed by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
