How Long is a Metre Compared to a Yard?

A metre is just a little bit longer than a yard. One metre is 39.37 inches, which is 1.0936 yards. One yard is also equal to 91.44 centimetres, but a metre is 100 centimetres.

Multiply the total length in metres by 1.0936 to get the length in yards. To change the length from yards to metres, divide the total length by 91.44.

Originally, a yard was supposed to be the length of a normal person’s step, while a metre is the distance light travels in a vacuum in about 1/3000 of a second. Since 1983, this is where it is supposed to go.
