How Many Cities Does the World Have?

Before answering how many there are, it’s important to define the word “city.” In its reports, the United Nations uses definitions that are at odds with each other. World Atlas was used to make a report that said there were 4,416 cities in the world with more than 150,000 people.

Some lists say that Tokyo is the biggest city in the world because it has 37 million people, but this is only true if the city and its surrounding area are counted as one city. The municipality also has 86 other towns and the city of Yokohama, which has 3.6 million people. The US Census Bureau said that there were 8.4 million people living in New York in 2013. New York is the largest city in the US.
