How Much Does a Car Weigh in Tons?

The typical American car weights only 4,000 pounds, or two tonnes. This represents the mean for all mass-produced cars in the country.

The majority of smaller, more fuel-efficient sedans, such the Toyota Camry or Subaru Impreza, weigh about 3,100 pounds (1.55 tons). Larger luxury vehicles like the BMW 740i weigh 4,300 pounds more than the norm (2.25 tons).

Many vehicles and SUVs weigh more than 2.5 or even 3 tonnes. The Honda Civic and Smart Fortwo, which barely tip the scales at 1.3 and 0.9 tonnes, respectively, are at the other extreme of the spectrum.
