How Much Sand Does a Cubic Yard Weigh?

A cubic yard of sand weighs between 2,600 and 3,000 pounds. Also about equivalent to 1 1/2 tonnes is this amount.

Gravel weighs slightly less per cubic yard, between 2,400 and 2,900 pounds, or around 1 1/2 tonnes. A cubic yard of sand should cover 100 square feet of ground at a 2-inch depth. Mulch weighs between 600 and 800 pounds per cubic yard, which is much less than the 100 square feet of ground that one cubic yard will cover.
