In Science, What Does “Conclusion” Mean?

According to Patricia McNerney, a licenced math and science teacher, a conclusion is the final step in the basic scientific method, in which scientists determine whether the hypothesis was proven right. The conclusion is a single statement that supports or refutes the hypothesis and is supported or refuted by data analysis. Other scientists who recheck the original experiment may want to look into the findings.

Even if a scientist concludes that the hypothesis is flawed in some way, other scientists may change the original experiment based on the data and analysis. The scientific method works when other scientists learn by testing fresh ideas and experiments, according to the Utah State Office of Education.

According to biology expert Regina Bailey, the conclusion is the last step in the scientific method during a single experiment, and it is posted after the results. Making an observation is the first step in the scientific process, which is followed by asking a question, proposing a hypothesis, conducting an experiment, listing the results, and finally stating a conclusion.

Data collection is done by observing variations between the control and experimental groups. Before scientists declare an experiment’s conclusion, the results are sometimes plotted in charts or graphs to make them easier to interpret.
