Is Sherry Vinegar and Sherry Cooking Wine the Same Thing?Sherry vinegar and cooking sherry are two separate products made from the same fortified wine. While cooking sherry is a wine similar to Madeira or Marsala, sherry vinegar is a fermented wine or vinegar that has the same acidic or soured flavour as other vinegars.

Cooking sherry is versatile and can be easily swapped for another dry red or white wine in a variety of meals. Sherry vinegar is used to dress salads and flavour sauces and is quite similar to balsamic vinegar. A dry white or red wine, as well as Madeira or Port, can be substituted for sherry vinegar in a recipe, however they are considerably different.
