George Jung’s California link, Richard Barile, was involved in the Colombian cartel’s cocaine smuggling operation alongside Carlos Lehder. The aim was to smuggle cocaine from Colombia to the United States, with Richard Barile handling the rest of the work and distribution.
At Danbury, Carlos Lehder and George Jung were cellmates. Lehder taught Jung about smuggling, and Lehder introduced Jung to the cartel. Jung was always wary of introducing Barile to Lehder, fearing that he might be cut out of the operation.
He did eventually introduce the two men, and Lehder betrayed Jung and went straight past Barile, as Jung had predicted. Despite the fact that Lehder betrayed Jung, George was able to recover at the time, making over $100 million from other scams.
