What in a Memo Does “CC” Mean?

In a memo or other physical document, the term CC stands for “carbon copy.” CC stands for “courtesy copy” in a digital memo or other digital document.

The abbreviation CC basically indicates the same thing whether the note is digital or not. It is a duplicate of a document that is transmitted, solely for informative purposes, to someone other than the intended recipient.

Before the widespread use of computers and printers, papers were quickly copied using carbon paper, hence the phrase “carbon copy.” To better fit the digital era, the acronym was changed from carbon copy to courtesy copy.
