What Is the Definition of a Step Cousin?Step cousins are born when an aunt or uncle marries someone who already has children from a prior relationship. While the word “step cousin” is not recognised by civil law as an official relationship, it is a useful term to characterise such a relative.

Some people find the term “step cousin” to be excessively remote or confusing, which is why extended relatives beyond family siblings and first cousins are commonly referred to as cousins in some households. Furthermore, despite not sharing any familial blood, some people refer to close family friends as aunts, uncles, and cousins in genealogical research.
