Beret is a frequent name for a French hat. Round and flat, this style of hat is often made of a very soft fabric like cotton, hand-knit wool, felt, or even artificial fibres.
In France and Spain, the French beret is well recognised as a representation of the military. These hats were worn by soldiers as a part of their military attire, and they would rest slightly to one side or the other of the head. In order to help keep their heads dry while out guarding their sheep, shepherds in the French Pyrenees invented and first wore this style of cap.
