According to History.com, the rhyme about Lizzie Borden and the murder of her parents is: “Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother forty blows; when she realised what she had done, she gave her father forty-one.”
On August 4, 1892, the bodies of Lizzie Borden’s parents were discovered in their Fall River, Massachusetts, home. The bodies of Andrew and Abby Borden were mutilated with a hatchet. Lizzie became the prime suspect after purchasing an axe prior to the murders and burning a dress afterward.
Due to a lack of evidence, Lizzie was acquitted of the murders of her parents. No other suspects were charged with the murders.
