What Measures a Millimeter or Less?

A micrometre is smaller than a millimetre on the metric system. There are 1,000 microns in a millimetre, which is another name for a micrometre. A dust mite is generally 400 microns long, or 0.4 millimetres, while a human hair is normally between 40 and 50 microns broad, or 0.04 millimetre.

The metre serves as the basic unit in the metric system, while additional units are represented by multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. The micron (1 x 10-6 m), the nanometer (1 x 10-9 m), the picometer (1 x 10-12 m), and the femtometer (1 x 10-15 m) are all units smaller than the millimetre.
