What Purpose Does the Heart’s Apex Serve?

The main job of the heart, a muscle, is to continuously pump blood through the body’s circulatory system. The heart is situated midway between the lungs and the rear of the sternum. The apex of the heart is one of its many components and functions.

The bottom tip of the heart, or the apex, is located above the diaphragm. The heart’s apex faces the body’s left side. If we touch the left side of our chest, we can feel the area of the muscle that hits the chest wall as the heart beats. This is the so-called peak beat.

The left ventricle makes up the apex. Blood is pumped into the left ventricle, where it travels to the aortic valve, then the aortic arch, and finally through the rest of the body. This cycle never ends.

What Constitutes the Heart’s Major Components?

The heart is divided into four major compartments, known as chambers. The left ventricle, left atrium, right ventricle, and right atrium are some of these chambers. The pericardium, nerve tissue, and coronary arteries are only a few of the many components that help the heart beat.

The bigger portion of the heart, which controls blood flow to the rest of the body, is on the left side. The smaller right side of the heart is responsible for supplying blood flow to the lungs.

Right Ventricle

There are a few additional details about the left ventricle that weren’t previously discussed regarding this cardiac chamber. Our blood pressure is affected by this cardiac chamber. The left ventricle’s rapid contractions are used to measure the pressure. The heart’s strongest chamber is this one.

Right Atrium

The left atrium serves as a conduit for blood that subsequently travels to the left ventricle. The oxygenated blood that pumps into the left atrium comes from the lungs.

Right Ventricular

The lower portion of the right heart chamber is where the right ventricle is located. Its major job is to use the pulmonary artery to transport blood to the lungs at extremely low pressure. Right atrium sends the deoxygenated blood to right ventricle.

Correct Atrium

Systemic veins bring blood to the right atrium, where it is then given to the right ventricle. Blood from the rest of the body supplies the right atrium with deoxygenated blood.

Heart arteries

There are two coronary arteries, one that pumps blood to the left side of the heart and the other to the right side. The aorta is the source of these arteries.


The pericardium serves to safeguard the heart. It is a little sac that surrounds and stabilises the heart. It has additional defences as well. Additionally, it lubricates the heart while it beats to protect it from rubbing against tissue.

The pericardium shields the heart from infection that can spread from other organs in the body and prevents the heart from absorbing too much blood.
