The species of tuna fish determines the tuna fish’s average size. An albacore tuna fish typically ranges in size from 15 to 40 inches and weighs between 10 and 25 pounds. One of the biggest kinds, the Atlantic or northern bluefin tuna, weighs about 550 pounds.

The southern bluefin, bigeye, bonito, skipjack, tongol, and yellowfin tuna are additional species of tuna. The most popular variety of tuna is skipjack. It ranges in size from 15 to 30 inches on average. Approximately 70% of the canned or pouched tuna sold worldwide is made up of skipjack fish.
