Where in the Bible Does It Say to “Teach a Man to Fish”?

Teach a guy to fish is not a phrase from the Bible; it is a Chinese proverb. “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day,” the whole quote reads. A man can be fed for life if you teach him to fish.

Matthew 4:19 is the verse in the Bible that is frequently interpreted as saying, “Teach a man to fish.” Jesus is shown in this scene strolling close to the Sea of Galilee as he notices brothers Simon and Andrew casting out their fishing nets.

“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men,” Jesus tells them. (NASB) The following verse describes how Simon, popularly known as Peter, and Andrew abandon their fishing nets and decide to follow Jesus, becoming his first disciples.
