Michael Waltrip, better known as Buffy Waltrip, and Elizabeth Franks separated in 2010. Their 17-year marriage lasted. Michael Waltrip, a professional race car driver, published author, and racing pundit, is a co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing.
Michael Waltrip and Elizabeth Buffy Franks first spoke in August 1992. The pair wed on November 27, 1993, and have one daughter together. After the divorce, Buffy was granted custody of the daughter. Buffy owned the #55 Nascar race car while they were still together, and Michael Waltrip was the driver.
When Buffy ceased turning up at the racing store in 2008, rumours of the couple’s divorce began to spread in the public. They listed their home for sale and avoided appearing in public. The pair formally announced their divorce in 2010.
Although the precise cause of the divorce is unknown, Michael Waltrip has said that it was partly caused by a racing tragedy in the 2001 Daytona 500 that claimed the life of his mentor Dale Earnhardt. He discusses the incident in his book, “In the Blink of an Eye: Dale, Daytona, and the Day that Changed Everything,” and claims that he never processed the tragedy or sought counselling. As of July 2015, Buffy and Adam Hawthorne are wed.
